There is lots of discussion about…

There is lots of discussion about how relays hidden deep inside clients could lead to 'the death of nostr'. I used to agree, now I'm reconsidering.

I don't think those discussions factor in the (THE?) major players of the social networking ecosystem: 'influencers'. Those popular people who produce the vast majority of content worth consuming.

Those players have huge incentive to spread their message as far as possible. They will probably post to 100 relays. Every nostr guide for wanna be influencers will have instructions on how to make sure no client or relay ever owns you. With our open ecosystem, the only reason a content producer submits to a relay/client is if they make some exclusive deal like Joe Rogan+Spotify.

Which, to me, means that content will be widely distributed/decentralized, no matter how hard clients or relays try to 'own' it.

I'm not against the idea of trying to make relays the first-class objects for users - that's a good experiment. But this just seems like an attempt to shift power from clients to relays, while in fact influencers might be the ultimate power. There will never be just one influencer, there will be tens of thousands, and they will push back against any attempt of other players to capture nostr.

Does this add anything new to the discussion?
